Reflecting on 2023

As we approach the end of 2023, we want to take a moment to reflect on the journey we've shared this year. Throughout these twelve months, Tides Advocacy has been dedicated to deepening our commitment to liberation as the guiding principle that energizes our work. As a labor of love, we've taken significant steps towards transforming a 25-year institution through our pro-Black framework in pursuit of justice and centering movements.

We began the year with a Love Letter to Black People, reminding ourselves and our community of the importance of self-determination and collective support. This effort continued with Black Love Rising, an invitation that demands investment in love during times of struggle and change by amplifying our beloved disrupters whose resistance work brings us closer to freedom.

Celebrating and Investing in the Diversity of Black Texans with Resha Thomas, Program Director at Texas Black Action Fund, on what inspires her work and the challenges and opportunities that come with building Black civic engagement in the great state of Texas

Listening to Detained Immigrants for the Path to Liberation with Maru Mora Villalpando, Founder of La Resistencia, who are doing incredibly important work to empower those impacted by the immigration enforcement system and end the unjust treatment of undocumented immigrants in this country.

Organizing Young Latino Power in The Real OC with Hairo Cortes of Chispa, who shares the work he’s doing to create a political home for young Latinos and immigrant communities so they can get their voices heard and effect real change in a region that hasn’t always represented their interests

We are proud to have curated a strategy and learning space for almost 200 movement leaders in Houston who are deeply passionate about igniting a revolutionary shift in the political landscape of the United States. Our commitment extends beyond a mere vision; we are wholeheartedly devoted to aligning our organizational practices, visions, and resources to create sustainable platforms for BIPOC-led political organizing.

Our call to action remains clear: we welcome individuals, organizations, communities, and funders to tap into the Power of Us to birth solutions that make political transformation not just an aspiration – but a tangible reality.

Looking ahead to 2024, a crucial election year, Tides Advocacy is motivated by a strong sense of purpose. We believe that true solidarity is not built on the relationships between those who oppress us but on our unwavering moral obligation to all those who suffer from oppression.

Thank you for being an integral part of our community and for your dedication to a liberatory future.

We wish you joy, peace, and prosperity in the New Year.

With gratitude and solidarity,
The Tides Advocacy Team
