Roe v Wade Overturned: The Road Ahead

This morning’s 6-3 Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade eliminates a nearly 50-year-old constitutional right to safe, legal abortion. While this ruling was expected, we find ourselves angry and fearful for the direction of our society. At this moment, we hold space and also reckon with the realities in which we find ourselves.

Nearly half of the states will effectively ban all or most abortions through trigger or zombie laws that take effect in a range from immediately to 30 days from now. Congress and governors must protect abortion access. Millions of people are now at risk of losing access to safe and legal abortion in their states, and this makes reproductive access to healthcare virtually non-existent for those who already face discriminatory obstacles – especially BIPOC folx and the socioeconomically disenfranchised - who already face systemic racism and discrimination in healthcare.

The juxtaposition of yesterday’s Supreme Court decision to protect gun rights and today’s decision to strip people of their human right to autonomy is infuriating. At this very moment, the foundation of our humanity is being challenged and shaken in a way that amplifies the urgent need to support organizations that protect the future and vitality of our democracy.

We remain committed to and actively engaged in the fight for reproductive justice. In moments like this, we are grateful for the work of our staff and stand in solidarity with those who actively agitate and stand for reproductive and gender justice, including All Above All Action Fund, Third Wave Fund, Groundswell Action Fund, SWAN, Make it Work Nevada, Poder Latinx, Color Action Fund, NAPAWF, among many others.

We are full human beings, who are fully capable of the right to choose. We deeply believe in the right to be safe because it is not a privilege, it is our birthright.

As we reflect on the impact of this decision, we invite you all to center your wellbeing and tend to the needs of your soil by taking time to process feelings of outrage, devastation, and the somatic symptoms of feeling physically ill.

Tides Advocacy and our movement partners will continue to work towards our collective liberation and the restoration of the constitutional right to safe abortion.
