Jose Plascencia

 SENIOR ADVISOR • He/Him

Originally from Mexico, Jose has lived in both rural and urban areas in Mexico and Southern California before moving to the Bay Area. His experiences in these different social contexts helped root his interest in community work and serving diverse communities.

Jose is a trained accountant who began his career in business development roles, focusing on finance and emerging markets in the power sports industry. After receiving a bachelor's degree in accounting, he worked at an accounting and financial services firm specializing in nonprofit infrastructure. This experience solidified his interest in movement building and allowed him to understand how to merge social movement and business strategy.

Passionate about social movements, Jose has volunteered at various Bay Area nonprofits, focusing primarily on indigenous issues in Chiapas, Mexico, with an emphasis on issues of displacement, migration, environment, resistance movements, and community resilience. He has been a long-time volunteer with an Oakland-based all-volunteer organization that supports the post-conflict construction of health care, education, and economic infrastructure in autonomous-rural indigenous communities.
